They had waited a thousand years and several births to get to this life, yet they faltered again when it mattered. They only wanted to walk together but took a wrong turn again when the road forked. Their needs were limited, their desires humble – all they aspired was a small house, a porch to sit on and a yard with a tree in it and yet when the time came to lay the bricks they found themselves standing in a swamp.

Conspiracy

They went about in circles, covering the same course, cutting themselves in the same trenches and burning themselves under the same sun over and over again but falling short of a moment that could unite them forever. They gathered dust along the way, soiled themselves up, were mocked at and jeered by people who walked along. The life tested their mettle and posed questions that often crushed their spirits, betrayed their hopes and fractured their dreams. The universe conspired at every turn and just when it looked they were about to find each other, evil moats appeared along the way forcing them to find another route, another bridge to cross over.

It would have perhaps continued the same way till the end of time, but she had the patience of a mountain and he had a heart that could brave a million storms. They were both insomniacs and their bellies had a fire that the world had not yet been privy to. When they realized that they had been astray, they picked themselves up once again, rose from ashes and dusted their ageing feathers and decided to climb uphill again.

I will not conclude this story here for their journey isn’t complete yet and their quest isn’t fulfilled. They continue to pursue depsite several dangers lurking in the shadows. They keep their scars covered, their eyes dry and often wear their hearts on their sleeves. They even found a response to the conspiracy of the universe – he shrugs his shoulders and lets out a wry smile and she lets a cold sigh and winks and together they pick their pace, a step harder… a step faster.
